In January of 1993, the first formal meeting of the Elco Amateur Radio Society was held. We started out slow, with a basic set of By-Laws a small membership and limited service, but great ideas and plans for the future.
This past January, we celebrated our 6th Anniversary. We have grown a little since our beginnings, but the growth is steady. We have a repeater system which allows us to communicate virtually anywhere locally via Handheld, Mobile, or Base set-up.
It has about a 50 mile or better radius, from our area. We can also make telephone calls from those units, or if need be, receive phone calls also.
We have the only Amateur Radio Examination team in the area, which gives Amateur Radio exams each month. Our club is also fortunate enough to have one of the very few teams, also authorized to give FCC Commercial License Exams.
We do special events to help an organization to celebrate. These events, while allowing us to help you, also helps us to show the public what Amateur Radio can do, and give our club some valuable exposure.
We also participate in what is known as field day. This is the last weekend in June. We set up radio communications, often using no commercial power whatsoever, and make contacts all over the world, while gaining points for each thing that we do which helps to bring out the best of us in a simulated emrgency situation.
Then there is the experimenting aspects where each Amateur radio operator can create his own equipment and actually use it. Our club members do often times experiment in doing this type of thing. Who knows, maybe one day, an experiment of ours could be the invention that appears in your home of the future.
There is lots of fun to be had and lots to do. Our club helps to instill those ideas and to help you pursue them. Wouldn't you mind joining in on our fun? You can, just ask any of our members or officers.
